About

Lurra Gravel is a 500 km, 10,000-metre ultra rooted in Donostia-San Sebastian, pushing riders deep into the rugged Basque Country and its surrounding highlands. This unsupported bikepacking challenge weaves together the Cantabrian coastline, traditional stone mountain paths and the rolling green Basque interior, creating a route with a distinctly northern character. Atlantic humidity, technical terrain and constant short steep gradients set it firmly apart from drier inland events. Push Rider's preparation for northern ultra formats targets wet-surface traction management, cold and rain endurance protocols, and power output calibration for repeated short climbs, the specific demands of Cantabrian terrain over multiple days.

How to prepare for the Lurra Gravel with PUSH TRAINING 360?

With 500 km and 10,000 m of elevation in the Basque Country, the Lurra Gravel is a high-demand ultra combining high mileage with continuous elevation gain on green and wet terrain. The 12-week PUSH TRAINING 360 plan with weekly review includes 4 phases: high-volume aerobic base, threshold construction with work on medium and long climbs, specificity loading with consecutive-day blocks simulating ultra pace, and a pre-event taper. The 3-phase nutrition approach is fundamental: maximum glycogen loading before the event, continuous fuelling combining solids and gels during the route, and full recovery upon finishing. Pacing strategy in a 500 km ultra requires accepting very low intensities at the start to maintain forward capacity all the way to the finish.
