The Traka 200 is the most sought-after distance in the Traka ecosystem. It is not the longest — that is the 360 — nor the most accessible — that is the 100 — but it is the one that concentrates the most amateur cyclists who want a benchmark event without spending the night on the bike.
200 km across the dirt roads of Girona. Approximately 3,000 metres of elevation gain. Between 8 and 10 hours of sustained effort for a well-prepared amateur. A race IF between 0.68 and 0.72. That is what is waiting for you.
This guide is for those who want to arrive genuinely prepared, not for those who want to know whether finishing is theoretically possible.
What does the Traka 200 actually demand?
The Traka 200 profile is not a peak power problem. There are no 20-minute maximum climbs. The problem is accumulation: 200 km of terrain with constant gradient changes, a surface that absorbs power, and a duration that converts any inefficiency into a massive cost.
The effort profile in numbers:
- Distance: 200 km
- Accumulated elevation: ~3,000 m
- Estimated time for an amateur with 3.0 W/kg FTP: 8-10 hours
- Race IF (Intensity Factor): 0.68-0.72
- Estimated caloric expenditure: 4,500-6,000 kcal
- Target normalised power for a 75 kg cyclist with 225W FTP: 153-162W
What makes the Traka 200 hard is not any of those numbers individually. It is that all of them act simultaneously for 8-10 consecutive hours. Effort management in the first three hours determines whether the second half of the race is a controlled experience or a damage limitation exercise.
The three mistakes that ruin the Traka 200:
- Starting too fast. Peloton enthusiasm in the first 40 km leads to IF of 0.80-0.85. That drains the tank before the halfway point.
- Eating late. If you wait until you feel hungry, you have already arrived 30-40 minutes too late. At this intensity and duration, glycogen depletion manifests as mental fog before leg fatigue.
- Poorly configured equipment. High tyre pressure and an aggressive handlebar position turn 200 km of gravel into an upper body muscular fatigue problem, not a leg problem.
What FTP and weekly volume do you need?
Minimum FTP for the Traka 200:
3.0 W/kg. Below that number, the race is possible but the time extends significantly — beyond 10 hours — and fatigue accumulates exponentially in the final 60 km, which are the ones that determine whether the experience is good or unnecessary suffering.
At 3.3-3.5 W/kg, the Traka 200 is a demanding but completely manageable event. At 3.8 W/kg or above, you can consider racing with a time reference rather than simply finishing.

Below 8 hours per week sustained over 12 weeks, the volume base is insufficient for an event with this profile. It is not an opinion — it is effort arithmetic.
What if you cannot reach that volume? Prioritise quality over quantity: a 4-hour force endurance session at IF 0.75 delivers more specific adaptation than four 1-hour rides at IF 0.60. But do not pretend that 6 hours per week is enough to prepare for an 8-10 hour event.
How are the 12 weeks structured?
Preparation for the Traka 200 follows the same three-block structure as any long-distance event, but with specific emphases.
Base block (W1-W4): aerobic base and fat oxidation
Primary objective: consolidate the aerobic capacity that sustains 8-10 hours of continuous effort.

The key of the base block: long rides without carbohydrate in the first 60-90 minutes. This forces the body to use fat as the primary fuel at that intensity. It is the work that makes the difference in the final 60 km of the race, when glycogen stores are at their limit.
Recovery week (W4): reduce volume by 35%. One long ride of 2h-2h30’, all other sessions at 60-70% of normal duration. Evaluate FTP at the end of W4 with a 20-minute test to verify the block has produced the expected adaptation.
Intensity block (W5-W8): threshold and force endurance
Primary objective: raise functional FTP and build the ability to sustain normalised power between IF 0.68 and 0.72 for hours.
Key sessions:
Session A — Long threshold (Tuesday):
- 10’ warm-up zones 1-2
- 3×20’ at 95-100% FTP, 5’ recovery between sets
- 15’ cool-down Total duration: 1h30’-1h45’
Session B — Force endurance (Saturday):
- 4h-4h30’ total
- First hour: pure zone 2
- Hours 2-3: IF 0.73-0.78, terrain with gradient changes
- Last hour: zone 2 recovery
- Nutrition: 70-80 g CH/hour from hour 1
Sample week in W5-W6:

Intensity block mistakes:
- Making threshold intervals too short (under 15’). The adaptation stimulus is in the last 10 minutes of a 20-minute block.
- Turning Saturday’s force endurance session into a high-intensity effort. The objective is IF 0.73-0.78, not maximum effort.
- Skipping the recovery week. Without W8 recovery, the adjustment block starts with a recovery debt that never gets resolved.
Adjustment block (W9-W12): tapering, simulation and race plan
Primary objective: arrive at the Traka 200 start line at 100% functional capacity, with the nutrition protocol tested and the race plan defined.
The most important session in the block: race simulation in W10.
5 hours at IF 0.68-0.72, on gravel terrain if possible, with the exact nutrition protocol of race day:
- 80-90 g CH/hour from the first hour
- Same gels, bars and sports drink you will use in the race
- Same equipment configuration (tyres, pressure, bags)
This session has two objectives: confirm that the digestive system tolerates the nutrition protocol and verify that the target IF is sustainable for 5 hours on real terrain. Any problem that appears here — gastrointestinal issues, power failure in the last two hours — needs to be resolved before race day.
W11-W12 (tapering):
- W11: volume -30-35% vs peak week (W7). One 3h session with 2×20’ at 90% FTP. The rest, zone 2.
- W12: 3 days of activation rides 45’-1h. Day before race: 45’ with 3×3’ at 95% FTP. Race day: 15-20’ warm-up if the race organisation’s protocol allows.
How do you train nutrition for 8-10 hours?
Race nutrition is not decided the week before. It is built during the 12 weeks of preparation. The digestive system has a carbohydrate absorption capacity that can be trained — but not in two weeks.
The numbers that matter:
- Maximum absorbable carbohydrate without specific training: 60 g/hour (pure glucose)
- Maximum with training and glucose-fructose blend: 90-100 g/hour
- Target for the Traka 200: 80-90 g/hour from the first hour
If you attempt 80-90 g/hour without having trained it, the most likely result is gastrointestinal issues between km 100 and km 150 — precisely when you most need the system to work.
Progressive protocol:
- W1-W4: 45-55 g/hour on long rides. Start with pure glucose gels, no fructose.
- W5-W8: 60-70 g/hour. Introduce glucose-fructose blends (2:1 ratio or purpose-made products with maltodextrin + fructose).
- W9-W12: 80-90 g/hour in long simulations. Use exactly the products you will use in the race.
Hydration: 500-750 ml/hour depending on temperature and sweat rate. Do not wait until you feel thirsty. At the typical temperatures of 15-20°C in Girona in April-May, fluid loss does not produce obvious thirst until functional dehydration has already occurred.
Salt: if you use sports drink, sodium is already included. If you use plain water with gels, add salt capsules — 500-1,000 mg of sodium per hour in moderate temperature conditions.
What equipment to bring and what mistakes to avoid on race day?
Equipment does not win the Traka 200. But poorly configured equipment can cost you hours.
Tyres: minimum 40 mm. 42-45 mm if the announced terrain includes technical sections. Pressure: 32-36 psi rear, 30-34 psi front for a 70-80 kg cyclist. Above 40 psi on gravel, every stone and root translates into vibration that reaches the arms and back.
Handlebar position: if you arrive with a short stem (70-80 mm) and a gravel handlebar with flare (25-35°), the position is more comfortable for hours on end. If you come with a long road stem (100-120 mm) and a narrow bar, the first warning signs arrive at km 80: tingling hands, trapezius tension.
On-bike food: calculate 300-350 kcal/hour for 9 hours = 2,700-3,150 kcal you need to carry or source. The race organisation’s feed stations cover part of this, but do not plan your nutrition around them — plan it as if they did not exist and use the feed stations as a supplement.
The five most common race day mistakes:
- Starting at peloton pace instead of your own pace. The first 40 km feel easy — they are designed to feel easy.
- Skipping feed stations for fear of losing time. One minute stopped eating saves 15 minutes of caloric crisis at km 160.
- Not checking tyre pressure the day before. Correct pressure is the single most important equipment decision you make.
- Using new equipment in the race. New handlebar, unbroken-in shoes, untested stem: any of these can destroy 12 weeks of preparation.
- Going to the nutrition limit without having tested the system beforehand. Km 150 is not the moment to discover that the organisation’s gel does not agree with you.
Coming from the 100 or aiming for the 360?
If you are coming from the Traka 100: the 200 is the logical next step, but do not underestimate the distance jump. The 100 lasts 4-5 hours for an amateur; the 200 lasts 8-10. It is not twice as hard — it is exponentially more demanding in terms of nutrition, recovery and mental management. You need at least one full 12-week preparation cycle specific to the 200, even if you have already completed the 100.
If you are aiming for the 360: the 200 is the recommended prior step if you have no experience in events over 200 km. The 360 adds night management, accumulated fatigue between stages and a psychological load that the 200 does not replicate. Preparing the 200 well is a requirement, not a suggestion.
