TL;DR. What distinguishes a gravel training plan from a road plan?
Gravel adds three variables that road training does not cover by default.
The first is duration. A 100 km gravel race can take 4 hours on a demanding course. A 200 can exceed 9 hours. Training must include long rides that exceed 60-70% of estimated race time — something standard road plans rarely contemplate.
The second is terrain. The accumulated vibration of hours on dirt roads fatigues muscle groups that tarmac does not touch: trapezius, triceps, cervical extensors and lower back. A gravel plan incorporates stability work and specific sessions on dirt, not just watts on the road.
The third is integrated nutrition. In gravel there is no support team, feed stations are not always available, and temperature and humidity conditions change. Training carbohydrate intake on long rides is not optional — it is part of the plan.
Block 1 (weeks 1-4): aerobic base and metabolic efficiency
What this block does and why it matters
The first block builds the foundation on which the intensity weeks produce real adaptations. Without it, the intensity of block two overloads the system without generating the long-duration adaptations that decide performance in gravel.
The emphasis is volume at low intensity: zones 1-2 by heart rate zones or below the fat threshold by power. This develops mitochondrial capacity, improves fat oxidation and reduces glycogen dependence in long efforts.
Sample sessions (base block)
Sunday long ride. 3-4 hours at zone 2 with varied terrain. In the last two weeks of the block, 4-5 hours including sections of dirt road. It is the most important session in the block and is non-negotiable.
Force endurance session (Tuesday or Wednesday). 90 minutes with 3-4 sets of 10 minutes on climbs at low cadence (55-65 rpm) at zones 3-4. This work improves muscular efficiency without the cardiac cost of high intensity.
Active recovery ride (Thursday or Friday). 60-75 minutes at zone 1. This is not a day off — it is the session that accelerates recovery for the next intensity stimulus.
Common mistakes in the base block
The most frequent mistake is going too hard on the long rides. Zone 2 is uncomfortable, not painful. If you cannot maintain a conversation, you are going too fast. The other mistake is compressing the block to 2 weeks to reach intensity sooner: the result is that the intensity block produces exhaustion, not adaptation.
Block 2 (weeks 5-8): specific intensity and force endurance
What this block does
The second block applies high-intensity stimuli on top of the aerobic base that has been built. The cardiovascular system can now process a higher volume of intense work without reaching its limit on every session.
Consistent with what is documented in the Traka 2027 preparation guide, in this block the IF (Intensity Factor) of long sessions approaches 0.75-0.80. The objective is to accustom the body to sustaining near-threshold power for 3-4 hours, which is the real demand of a mid-distance gravel race.
Sample sessions (intensity block)
Threshold intervals (Tuesday). 3×20 minutes at 95-100% FTP with 5 minutes of recovery. Alternative without a power meter: 3×20 minutes at an effort that is sustainable but not easily repeatable (zone 4).
Force endurance on terrain (Wednesday or Thursday). 2.5-3 hours with at least 45 minutes accumulated on long climbs at low cadence (55-65 rpm) in zones 3-4. If gravel terrain is available, the second half of the session on dirt.
Long ride with finishing effort (Saturday). 4-5 hours with the final 60-90 minutes at zone 3. Simulates the accumulated fatigue of the second half of a race.
Short intensity session (Friday). 60-75 minutes with 4-6 sets of 3-5 minutes at 105-115% FTP. Improves VO2max and adds variety to the stimulus.
What differentiates this block from the previous one
The sessions in this block produce real fatigue. Recovery management is as important as intensity. If you arrive at Wednesday unable to complete the force endurance session, the problem is not the current week — it is that the base block was insufficient or that you are combining training load with poor sleep and nutrition.
Block 3 (weeks 9-12): adjustment, tapering and race rehearsals
What changes in the third block
The third block reduces load while maintaining sharpness. Volume drops 30-40% from the block two peak. Intensity remains present in shorter sessions to avoid losing the neuromuscular adaptations gained.
The key difference is that here you rehearse race conditions: the nutrition strategy on long rides (how much you eat, when, what), the specific equipment (bags, bottles, tools), the starting pace that does not destroy you at km 30.
Weeks 9-10: progressive reduction
Volume at 75% of peak. Keep the threshold intervals but reduce from 3 to 2 sets. The weekend long ride drops from 5 hours to 3.5-4 hours with the same finishing effort structure.
Weeks 11-12: tapering and race preparation
Volume at 55-60% of peak. One short intensity session per week (3-5 minute intervals). Long rides reduced to 2-2.5 hours but including sections on terrain similar to the race.
In week 12, the final 4-5 days are minimal load: 45-60 minute rides, fresh legs, confirmation of the nutrition plan for race day.
When a generic plan is not enough
A 12-week plan downloaded from the internet works if you follow it and have the appropriate prior base. It stops working in four specific situations.
The first: if you have been riding for less than 12 months on a regular basis. The base is insufficient and the plan will break you or produce very little.
The second: if your nutrition is limiting recovery. This happens with 70-80% of amateur cyclists and no training plan resolves it on its own.
The third: if your target race has very specific characteristics (extreme elevation, intense heat, technical terrain) that the generic plan has not accounted for.
The fourth: if you have had injuries or frequent interruptions in the last 6 months. A coach adjusts load in real time; a plan does not.
