TL;DR. The Sea Otter Europe 2026 gravel race runs on September 19 in Juià (Girona): 109 km counting for the UCI Gravel World Series, with qualification for the Gravel World Championships on the line for the best in each age group. Registration is open until September 16 on seaottereurope.com — and it is, as of today, the last big gravel event of 2026 where you can still get a bib. Eight weeks to go: enough to sharpen, just enough to build.
While The Traka 2027 was selling out distances in a week and Santa Vall opens registration with alarm bells ringing, there is one big race you can still enter today, with no fight for a bib: the Sea Otter Europe gravel race in Girona.
And it is not a minor event: it is a round of the UCI Gravel World Series. Here is everything you need to know.
What is the Sea Otter Europe gravel race?
Every September, the Sea Otter Europe festival turns Girona into the cycling capital of Europe. Within its competitive programme, the gravel race — September 19, 2026, starting in Juià — covers 109 km through the Gavarres: fast tracks, sterrato and the terrain that has made Girona the epicentre of continental gravel.
The race is part of the 226ERS UCI Gravel World Series, the UCI’s international series.
What is at stake: the UCI Gravel World Series
At every round of the series, the best riders in each age group — roughly the top 25 percent of the classification — earn a spot at the UCI Gravel World Championships. It is one of the peculiarities gravel has brought to cycling: an amateur with serious preparation can qualify to race a World Championship with a rainbow jersey at stake.
That makes it two races in one: the riders chasing the cut, and the riders completing 109 September kilometres in Girona with a festival atmosphere. Both are legitimate. What does not work is showing up without a plan.
How does registration work?
- Status: open right now.
- Closes: September 16, 2026, or earlier if spots fill up.
- Where: on the official website, seaottereurope.com, which redirects to its registration platform.
- Price: published on the platform itself by distance and registration date — as always, the earlier, the cheaper.
Unlike the Klassmark events, this race does not usually sell out months in advance. But September in Girona draws half the continent: do not leave it for the final week.
Can you prepare in 8 weeks?
From today to the start line there are eight weeks. The honest answer depends on your starting point:
- If you already have an aerobic base (regular 3-4 hour rides, consistent volume this spring): eight weeks is enough for a specific intensity block — threshold, strength endurance, race-pace work —, an adjustment block and a proper taper. You arrive ready to race.
- If your summer has been irregular: there is no time to build base and add intensity at once. The realistic goal is to finish well: progressive volume, conservative pacing and the race as an experience, not an exam.
The classic August mistake is trying to do both: stacking kilometres and hammering intensity simultaneously. Eight well-periodised weeks beat twelve improvised ones.
The smart play: Sea Otter as a dress rehearsal
If your real goal sits in winter-spring — Santa Vall in February (registration opens July 29) or The Traka in April-May —, Sea Otter Gravel is the best possible test: same region, comparable terrain, real race environment. A September rehearsal of pacing, equipment and nutrition is worth more than any lab session, and leaves the winter clear for specific preparation.
It is exactly how we frame it in the programme: every intermediate race has a role in preparing the target race.
